PRE-CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHEMICAL PEEL TREATMENT

To ensure the best outcome for your chemical peel treatment, we kindly ask you to thoroughly review the following pre-care instructions. Your understanding and adherence to these guidelines are essential for maximizing the benefits of your treatment and minimizing the risk of complications. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these instructions, please don’t hesitate to discuss them with your esthetician before your appointment.

It’s crucial to inform your esthetician of any conditions that may contraindicate the chemical peel treatment, such as recent use of Accutane, pregnancy or breastfeeding, history of photosensitivity, autoimmune diseases, or connective tissue disorders. Patients with certain medical conditions may be required to provide a clearance letter from their primary care physician or specialist confirming the safety of undergoing chemical peel treatments.

Discuss your complete medical history, current medications, allergies, skin type, and any predisposition to scarring, keloids, or slow healing with your esthetician. Additionally, disclose any history of cold sores to ensure appropriate precautions are taken, including the provision of antiviral medication if necessary.

Prior to your chemical peel appointment, refrain from using any acidic products, retinoids, acne medications, AHAs, BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, vitamin C products, lightening agents, or exfoliative products for at least one week. These substances can increase skin sensitivity and heighten the risk of complications.

Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products on the treatment areas for four weeks leading up to your appointment to prevent skin damage, hyperpigmentation, and hypopigmentation. We strongly advise against tanning practices due to their association with skin cancer and premature aging.

Refrain from tweezing, waxing, depilatory use, or electrolysis in the treatment areas for one week before your appointment.

If you regularly receive Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox®) or dermal filler injections, it’s recommended to schedule these procedures at least one week prior to your chemical peel treatment, unless otherwise advised by your healthcare provider.

In case of an active cold sore or skin infection on the day of your scheduled treatment, please contact our office promptly to reschedule your appointment.

For your comfort and protection, bring along a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun on your journey home.

Ensure that the treatment areas are thoroughly cleansed and free of makeup upon arrival for your appointment.

Refrain from applying creams, lotions, aftershave, cologne, or perfumes to the treatment areas on the day of your appointment. Avoid shaving the treatment area on the day of your appointment as well.

POST-CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHEMICAL PEEL TREATMENT

To ensure optimal results and safety, please carefully review the following post-care treatment instructions for your chemical peel. If you have any queries or concerns, do not hesitate to discuss them with your esthetician. Adhering to these guidelines is vital for maximizing the benefits of your treatment and minimizing the risk of complications. Your esthetician may provide additional instructions tailored to your individual needs.

Expected Recovery Process:

The duration of peeling typically ranges from 7-10 days, varying based on factors such as skin type, age, lifestyle, and environmental conditions. Expect mild redness, sensitivity, and flaking as dead skin cells are shed. Healing times may differ across body areas due to variations in skin texture.

Normal Reactions:

It’s normal for your skin to appear rough, patchy, or slightly darker post-treatment, resolving spontaneously. Peeling usually begins around the nose and mouth within 3-4 days, but it can commence elsewhere or not at all. Even without visible peeling, the treatment still exfoliates the skin microscopically, delivering benefits.

Potential Side Effects:

Possible side effects encompass mild to severe redness, temporary tightness, itching, swelling, and dryness akin to a sunburn or windburn, typically subsiding within 2-3 days. In cases of inflammation or irritation, your esthetician may recommend hydrocortisone products.

Care Practices:

  • Apply a cold compress gently to alleviate any burning or irritation.
  • Avoid excessive heat exposure, direct sunlight, tanning beds, and self-tanners on treated areas for 4 weeks post-treatment.
  • Refrain from strenuous exercise for 2-3 days to prevent exacerbating inflammation.
  • Minimize sweating until peeling subsides to avoid skin irritation or blistering.
  • Avoid acidic products, acne medications, and exfoliants for at least 2 weeks to mitigate photosensitivity and potential complications.
  • Refrain from activities such as tweezing, picking, waxing, or undergoing cosmetic services on treated areas for 4 weeks to reduce scarring risk.
  • Postpone hair dyeing until a week after peeling completes, especially for facial or neck treatments.
  • Be vigilant for cold sore outbreaks post-treatment and consult your esthetician for appropriate management.

Skin Care Routine Post-Peel:

  • Cleanse delicately with cool water and fingertips, avoiding abrasive tools or harsh cleansers.
  • Moisturize frequently to prevent dryness and discomfort, using gentle, non-comedogenic products.
  • Shield your skin from heat and sunlight with protective measures such as broad-spectrum sunscreen and physical barriers like hats and umbrellas.

Recommended Products:

Consider using gentle cleansers like Revision Gentle Cleanser or mild alternatives such as Dove Unscented Bar Soap for Sensitive SkinⓇ, AveenoⓇ, CetaphilⓇ, or CeraVeⓇ, as advised by your esthetician.

For moisturizing, products like SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective GelⓇ, SkinCeuticals Epidermal RepairⓇ, or non-comedogenic options such as AveenoⓇ, VanicreamⓇ, CetaphilⓇ, or CeraVeⓇ are recommended.

Protect your skin from UV exposure using physical sunblocks like SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50Ⓡ or Colorescience SunforgettableⓇ, applying as directed and reapplying frequently during sun exposure.

By following these guidelines diligently, you can support the healing process and optimize the outcomes of your chemical peel treatment.
